Despite a sluggish economy and shoppers that are cutting back on almost everything, sales of handguns, rifles and ammunition have surged in the last week, according to gun store owners around the nation who describe a wave of buyers concerned that an Obama administration will curtail their right to bear arms. Buyers across the country are snapping up firearms at a record pace.
At Cheaper Than Dirt alone, more than $100,000 in guns and ammunition have been sold every day since Election Day. Buyers are stocking up before President-elect Barack Obama takes office. Business is so good that gun dealers are furiously calling suppliers to find more guns. In fact, many stores are sold out of assualt weapons such as an AK-47.
Over the past two days, sales have jumped roughly 60 percent, primarily for high-capacity firearms. Most gun shops have had record one-day sales this week. Customers have signed up for waiting lists as demand exceeded manufacturers’ supplies. Gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.
As a U.S. senator, Obama voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to lawsuits; and as an Illinois state legislator, he supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on all firearms. Gun advocates take some solace in the Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 this summer to strike down the District of Columbia’s 32-year handgun restriction. While gun-rights supporters hold a narrow edge on the court, Obama could appoint justices who would swing it the other way.
Many people are buying guns, ammo, and weapons as an investment, as these will be a banned necessity in coming years.
